Free Schools

A Free School is a school that has been founded by a not-for-profit organisation. They are funded by the government but aren’t run by the local council. This allows them more freedom, e.g. they don’t have to follow the national curriculum. They also have more control over how they do things, e.g. they can change the length of school terms and the school day. A

Free School can be set-up by groups such as:

• Charities

• Universities

• Independent schools

• Community and faith groups

• Teachers

• Parents

• Businesses
